Shikemichi Walking Tour 3 Hours
Shikemichi refers to the Shikemichi area of Nagoya City, which suffered relatively little damage during the war, and even today many storehouses and traditional buildings remain, indicating that it was once a castle town and a merchant district. Along Ofunamachi-dori, storehouses once stood on the east side of the street, and townhouses on the west side. These were storehouses and merchant residences used for commercial activities that took advantage of the water transport on the Horikawa River, and both the land and buildings were extensive.
Along Shikemichi, a stone wall about one meter high was built on the east side of the street, and many storehouses are still lined up on top of it. The continuous black hon-gawara tiles, white plaster walls, and stone walls are a typical sight of the Shikemichi area. In the area west of Shikemichi, one-story, two-storey, and two-storey tenement houses line both sides of an alley two to three meters wide, retaining a traditional downtown atmosphere that is rare in the city center.
